Event Details

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuaries rely on volunteers to tally whale populations, and are again preparing for this season’s important work.

With approximately 150 volunteers, including residents and visitors, participants gather at 26 sites on Oahu, 21 sites on the Big Island, and 15 sites on Kauai to count whales. (See https://hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov/involved/ocwelcome.html for a list of sites by island).

The survey provides data of humpback whale sightings from the shoreline, while promoting public awareness about whales and shore-based whale watching opportunities.

Oahu sites include Halona Blowhole, Lanikai, Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head Lookout and Magic Island. (Magic Island is walking distance from Waikiki.) Some sites fill up quickly — register early.

Other dates include February 29 and March 28.
