Coffee was first planted in Kona by missionary Samuel Ruggles in 1828 or 1829. Turns out coffee and Kona were a perfect match — Kona with its rich volcanic soil, hard-working family farmers, and perfect climate. 

In 1873, at the World’s Fair in Vienna, an award for excellence was given to Henry Nicolas Greenwell, a pioneering Kona coffee merchant. And by 1920, about 80 percent of Kona’s coffee farms, were family-run. Today, there are about 650 farms cultivating coffee in the Kona district. Kona has become to coffee what Napa is to wine. There are about 3.5 acres of land utilized in Kona coffee farming, producing approximately 3.8 million pounds of coffee a year. 

The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival is recognized as the oldest and most successful food festival in Hawaii, and honors Kona’s cultural heritage, recognizing the accomplishments of Kona coffee pioneers, farmers and artisans.
