Travel from Oahu
to French Polynesia
What you need to know about COVID-19 testing, vaccination
and regional travel requirements
Requirements for traveling to French Polynesia
French Polynesia has adopted restrictions for travelers entering the country. Travelers flying from Hawaii to French Polynesia must review Tahiti Tourism’s COVID-19 information pages. All travelers must register with the country’s ETIS platform between 30 and 6 days prior to departure. Please read travel requirements carefully as pre-travel and post-arrival testing is required. Travelers who have not followed the instructions may not be able to board the aircraft.
Note: unvaccinated travelers must have a “compelling reason” to travel and must receive pre-departure authorization from French Polynesia (unvaccinated travelers will not be granted a travel authorization for the reason of tourism). Unvaccinated travelers will be required to complete a 10-day mandatory quarantine.
In addition, please keep in mind that French Polynesia requires that masks are worn for the duration of the flight to Faaa International Airport (PPT), as well as at the airport upon arrival.
Returning to Oahu
The United States requires all non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. immigrants entering the country by plane be fully vaccinated. Limited exceptions apply.
A summary of entry requirements is outlined in the steps below. Full details on the new U.S. entry requirements can be found on the U.S. CDC’s website. A flow chart outlining the process can also be found here.
Requirements for all international travelers as of Dec. 6, 2021:
- Show proof of a negative COVID-19 test (nucleic acid amplification test [NAAT] or antigen) taken no more than 1 day prior to the last leg of departure to the U.S. All travelers 2 years and older need to complete this step.
- Sign a CDC attestation. Attestations need to be completed for all travelers 2 years and older prior to boarding.
- All non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. immigrants must be fully vaccinated to enter the country by plane (limited exceptions apply – see below). U.S. citizens are not required to be vaccinated, but they do need to meet the pre-travel testing requirement and sign the CDC attestation mentioned above.
- Vaccinated travelers need to show proof of full vaccination status prior to boarding. See details on accepted vaccines, as well as acceptable forms of proof of vaccination. Children under the age of 18 are not required to show proof of vaccination.
All international travelers
Follow the step-by-step instructions to meet the requirements necessary for entering the U.S. and State of Hawaii. If you do not meet these requirements, you will not be able to board your flight.
Please note that some exceptions apply for unvaccinated non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. immigrants:
- If you are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you will not be able to board a flight to the United States unless you meet the criteria for an exception under the U.S. government proclamation and CDC’s Order. See the full list of exceptions and requirements for each listed here. Please note that some exceptions will require post-arrival testing, quarantine upon arrival or possibly even agreement to vaccination after 60 days, so it’s critical that you read through the full requirements.
- Show proof of a negative COVID-19 test (nucleic acid amplification test [NAAT] or antigen) taken no more than 1 day prior to the last leg of departure to the U.S. All travelers 2 years and older need to complete this step.
- Sign two attestations; one confirming your negative test result and the other confirming that you are excepted from the requirement to present proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Download and print the form prior to arriving at the airport. Attestations need to be completed for all travelers 2 years and older prior to boarding.

Schedule or purchase a COVID-19 test
Do this as soon as your flight is booked.
Make an appointment with a COVID-19 test provider in your area or purchase your test kit as soon as you’ve booked your flight.
Confirm the turnaround time for test results as well as the test type (viral NAAT or antigen test) with the test provider. Once confirmed, you will need to take your test no more than 1 day prior to the initial scheduled departure into Hawaii. Every traveler 2 years and older needs to take a test.

Take your test
Do this no more than 1 day before your flight to Hawaii.
As a reminder, the test must be a viral NAAT or antigen test. Follow the testing instructions outlined by your test provider on the day of your test.

Print your negative COVID-19 test result
Do this once you receive your negative test result.
When you receive your negative test result, we recommend printing a copy and packing it in your carry-on bag. You may be asked to show a printed copy of your test result during the screening process.

Bring your vaccination card to the airport
Pack this in your carry-on bag, as you will be asked to show proof before boarding.
Prior to boarding your flight to Hawaii, you will be asked to show proof of your full vaccination status by presenting your physical vaccination card. Have your card easily accessible in your carry-on bag.
If you are an unvaccinated U.S. citizen, you do not need to show proof of vaccination, but will need to complete all other steps.

Print and complete the CDC forms
Don’t forget to pack this with you before you depart for the airport.
Every traveler 2 years and older will need to complete the following CDC passenger forms either at home (recommended) or during check-in at the airport. Be sure to present your completed forms at the ticket counter.

Get pre-cleared prior to departure
Allow extra time to do this before boarding the aircraft.
From your departure airport, you’re able to get pre-cleared during check-in or at the gate. A Hawaiian Airlines Guest Services Agent will verify your documents and allow you to board the plane. Once screened at the gate, you do not need to be screened or quarantined upon arrival in Hawaii.
Traveling with kids?
If you’re traveling with keiki (children), here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Children 2 years and older will be required to take a COVID-19 viral test (NAAT or antigen test) to enter the U.S. and Hawaii.
- Every child 2 years and older will need to complete the CDC passenger attestation forms.
Masks
Wearing a face mask is optional onboard our aircraft from French Polynesia to Hawaii, however Faaa International Airport does require that masks are worn inside the airport leading up to boarding. Conversely, when traveling to French Polynesia from Hawaii, it is required to wear a mask for the duration of the flight and upon arrival at Faaa International Airport.
