Kailua Bay Pier, Kailua-Kona

Marine life abounds in protected waters

Visitors and would-be snorkelers stroll historic Kailua Town along the seawall and never realize that the uniquely Hawaiian riches of the ocean are right there in the gorgeous bluegreen waters of Kailua Bay.

Enter at the small sandy beach where the seawall meets the pier and either follow the seawall to your left to the reef, or follow the swimmerʻs buoys along the swim lanes.

A typical day can look like a tour through a fish ID book with the sometime added bonus of a massive mackerel scad “bait ball” milling in the deeper water by the buoys.
