Dating back more than 400 years, four-acre Koieie Fishpond once fed the village in north Kihei, Maui, that surrounded it.
On the Koieie Fishpond Hawaiian Cultural Canoe Tour, you’ll paddle through the pond in an outrigger canoe, getting up-close looks at its kuapa (rock wall), which was built without mortar.
Gazing at the coast from the ocean, you’ll learn about the ancient ahupuaa (land division) system and the marine creatures that live in the near-shore reef.
Humpback whale sightings are a bonus from December through April.
The tour supports the educational programs and fishpond restoration project of the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization Aoao O Na Loko Ia O Maui.
