1. Hawaiian Airlines (“HA”) accepts certain animals for transport in the cabin of the aircraft, as checked baggage and in cargo. For the safety and security of all, including the animals, guests and crew, and for necessary operational needs, this rule sets out conditions, restrictions and requirements for animals traveling in cabin and checked baggage. Animals in cargo are subject to cargo restrictions. HA strongly recommends that you read and understand the provisions in this rule before traveling with an animal so that you and your animal are best prepared for your journey.
  2. This rule does not apply to the transportation of Service/Support Animals. For Service/Support Animals, please see Rule 55.
  3. For animals who have to travel in cargo, please contact HA regarding cargo procedures or visit hawaiianaircargo.com for information and details. Please note, in certain rare circumstances, animals intended for baggage may be required to go in cargo.
  4. General Conditions for Acceptance: The following are the general conditions for acceptance of animals. In addition to the General Conditions for Acceptance, if your animal will be traveling in the cabin of the aircraft, you should review the restrictions in the In Cabin section E. below, or if your animal will be traveling as checked baggage, you should review the restrictions in the In Checked Baggage section F. below.
    1. For the comfort of all travelers, the animal must not be offensive or disruptive. This includes, among other things, excessive barking, emitting strong odors, attacking others, inappropriate toileting, and other disruptive behavior. HA reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to remove offensive or disruptive animals prior to departure, during transit or at the first en route.
    2. Carriers and kennels required.
Guests traveling with animals in cabin must travel with a carrier and comply with the carrier requirements set forth below in the In Cabin section. Guests traveling with animals as checked baggage must provide a kennel and comply with the kennel requirements as set forth below in the In Checked Baggage section. HA does not provide carriers or kennels. Please note that failure to have a compliant carrier or kennel will result in denial of travel for the animal.
    3. Advance notification.
HA recommends guests provide the airline with advance notification of their intent to travel with their animals by calling HA at 1-800-367-5320 or emailing us using our Ask a Question page. There are limits to the number of animals accepted as checked baggage and advance notification will help the guest check availability prior to arriving at the airport and secure one of the limited available spots.
    4. State requirements to travel with animals to Hawaii.
The State of Hawaii has many requirements that need to be met in order to bring animals into the State. It can take months of pre-planning to bring an animal in without quarantine. Since this is a State of Hawaii requirement, guests should direct questions to the State of Hawaii Animal Industry Division – Animal Quarantine Branch. Please note, guests are solely responsible for understanding and complying with State requirements. If the State requirements are not met, the animal may be denied boarding or denied entry into the State. In either case, the guest accompanying the animal is fully responsible for all costs and expenses involved in boarding the animal, additional transport to other locations and any other services relating to the animal’s denial of boarding or denial of entry into the State of Hawaii. The guest will indemnify HA for any losses, including costs and expenses, incurred.
    5. Animal health certificates.
This animal health certificate requirement is in addition to and separate from any State of Hawaii requirements. Guests must obtain an animal health certificate from the animal’s treating veterinarian, prior to the first departure date as follows:
      • Travel within the State of Hawaii:             No animal health certificate required
      • Travel from North America to Hawaii:     14-days prior to travel
(*Pets in cabin not permitted into Hawaii. This certificate applies only to pets as checked baggage.)
      • Travel from Hawaii to North America:     14-days prior to travel
    6. Compliance to departure, layover or arrival jurisdictions’ laws, regulations, and other restrictions.
Guests must comply with all applicable laws, regulations or other restrictions set forth by the jurisdiction that governs the animals’ transport, entry or departure (e.g. port of entry, intermediate destination, port of departure, etc). This may include restrictions on types of animals allowed, fees, customs, inspection or health requirements. If the guest accompanying the animal fails to comply with the laws, regulations or restrictions of a governing jurisdiction, the animal may be denied boarding and the guest will be fully responsible for all direct and indirect consequences including costs and expenses incurred by HA in resolving the matter (e.g. boarding the animal, additional transport, veterinarian costs, and any other related services). The guest will indemnify HA for all losses including, but not limited to, costs and expenses.
    7. Liability release. All guest must sign a liability release form prior to HA accepting the animal for transport.
    8. Other Airline Carrier Transfers.
Animals accepted for carriage in the cabin of the aircraft or as checked baggage will not be transferred, interlined or checked beyond a point of transfer to a carrier other than HA or Empire Airlines DBA ‘Ohana by Hawaiian.
    9. Animal care.
Guests accompanying animals agree to be fully responsible for the animals and to provide all provisions and care for the animals. HA cannot provide food, water or any kind of care to any traveling animals.
    10. Financial responsibility.
The guest accompanying an animal is responsible for all financial obligations involved in the transport of the animal including vaccinations, health certificates, quarantine charges, customs fees, inspections, and all costs and expenses associated with animal care for delays, denial of boarding and all other circumstances. The guest is also responsible for any damage as a result of the animal’s behavior including damage to property beyond regular wear and tear and any harm to others (“damage and harm”).
