Restricted items

It can be difficult to keep up with the latest rules for what you can and can't bring. We've put together this list for some of the more common restricted items.

 Common restricted items
Recalled batteries and devices - Lithium batteries recalled by the manufacturer/vendor must not be carried aboard aircraft or packed in baggage. Battery-powered devices recalled because of lithium battery safety concerns also should not be carried aboard aircraft or packed in baggage unless the device or its battery has been replaced, repaired or otherwise made safe per manufacturer/vendor instructions. The FAA and your airline may offer further public guidance on individual recalled products. Product recall information is available at http://www.cpsc.gov/recalls. Learn more.
Seat accessories - Devices such as footrests and child beds which attach to aircraft seats, fit between the seats, or block access to the aisle may not be used onboard. They may be carried on but may not be used onboard.
International travel with powder-like substances (spices, coffee, powdered milk, etc.) - If you are entering the U.S. on an International flight, you are limited to 12 oz. (350 mL) of powder-like substance in your carry-on bag. Larger amounts may be allowed after additional screening. Powders over 12 oz. (350 mL) may also be placed in your checked bag. (Domestic flights and PPG-HNL flights are not affected.)
Smart bags - "Smart bags" with lithium-ion batteries will not be accepted as checked or carry-on bags unless the battery can be removed. Checked bags must have their batteries removed and carried in the cabin. Learn more.
Liquids, gels, and aerosols - Containers less than 3.4 oz (100 mL) may be placed in a transparent quart-sized bag and packed in your carry-on. Larger containers must be packed in your checked luggage. Hairspray and insect repellent are allowed.
Alcohol over 24% - Each guest may transport up to 5 liters in checked luggage. Containers must be original retail packaging and no larger than 5 liters. Note: beverages over 70% alcohol by volume are not accepted.
Poi, yogurt, chili, jams and jellies, etc. - Large containers of non-solid foods should be securely packed in your checked bag. Only small containers less than 3.4 oz. (100 mL) may be carried on. Exception: baby food sufficient for the flight may be carried on.
Ice - Ice is not accepted in carry-on or checked bags. Reusable gel packs should be used instead. Dry ice is permitted when packed according to FAA rules. Keep in mind that styrofoam coolers are not allowed as check-in items.
Camping equipment - Stoves, fuel, and fuel canisters are never accepted, even if new, unused, or purged of fuel.
E-cigarettes, atomizers, vaping devices - Electronic smoking devices are accepted in carry-on bags only.
Batteries - Any spare lithium or lithium ion batteries must be carried on with terminals protected from short circuit. Devices with installed lithium or lithium ion batteries should be carried on as well, whenever possible.
Laptops, tablets, mobile phones - Personal electronic devices may be carried on and used when instructed by a flight attendant.
Hoverboards, Segways, electric unicycles - Battery-powered self-balancing devices will not be accepted.
Matches and lighters - One book of safety matches and one common butane lighter may be carried on. All other matches and lighters are completely prohibited.
