Ho okipa Beach Park

Modern-day surfing on Maui started here, at this beach just outside of the charming artsy town of Paia on Maui’s northern coastline. Hookipa — it means “hospitality” in Hawaiian — is known as one of the world’s best windsurfing breaks, a sport introduced to the Islands in the early 1970s. Windsurfers from around the world congregate here, surfing the well-shaped waves generated by the gusty winds and winter swells. The beach park covers just over 8 acres, with three pavilions, barbecue grills, and more than 170 parking stalls. And watching can be just as fun, too; there’s a lookout above the beach where you can marvel at the experts in the surf.
