In 2003, Atlantis Adventures bought the Carthaginian II, a replica of a 19th-century supply ship that had fallen into disrepair, for $1.
It spent two and a half years and more than $300,000 to prep and sink the vessel as an artificial reef off Maui’s west coast.
A 48-passenger submarine (battery powered, so it doesn’t emit pollutants) takes you to the site, which is now home to corals, goatfish, white-tip reef sharks and more than 100 other species of marine life.
A short shuttle boat ride to and from Lahaina Harbor provides spectacular views of the West Maui Mountains, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe.
