America’s commercial zipline industry began on the slopes of Haleakala volcano on Maui in 2002 with the Haleakala Zipline Adventure.
To prepare for the activity, Skyline Eco-Adventures’ conservation-minded team began removing non-native trees and replacing them with natives, including koa, ohia, iliahi, mamane, mamaki and maile.
Over the years, the work has continued.
Today, in addition to crossing a swinging bridge and 90-foot-deep canyons, you’ll fly up to 45 miles per hour on a zipline named Io (Hawaiian hawk), which crosses an area that has been transformed from pastureland and invasive trees to a six-acre native forest with canopies rising 40 feet tall.
